In the spring, I wrote an article about my experiences building soil on a bare patch of ground in the garden. Through those experiences, I began shaping my soil-building strategy around earthworms. At the end of the article, I promised another article taking a look at the science of earthworms. Here is that article, albeit a few months later than planned...better late than never!
A few weeks ago, I wrote about how I got some free wood chips from a local composting facility. Much of my discussion about the virtues of wood chips related to their use as mulch. But I also hinted that I was planning to use them in other ways. This article is about one of those other uses.
This week, I'm going to tell you about a garden project of mine: building up soil organic matter on a patch of ground that was bare until recently. Even though this project is still ongoing, I want to share what I've learned so far.
